One of the objectives of school mathematics is to generate knowledge that is functionally integrated into our lives. Thus, it subscribes to the theoretical perspective of the use of knowledge in other settings as a basis of meaning for school mathematics. The case of periodic ownership of functions and their use in a disclosure scenario is discussed. In it, the use of said knowledge when working in an astronomical observation activity is shown beyond the application of a definition, and tools and arguments are developed around mathematical knowledge capable of integrating and being useful - not utilitarian - to the individual. . The results of the reported analyzes of the extracurricular use of periodicity contribute to a base of meanings for the periodic property and, in this way, to a functional school mathematics for the life of the students.
