We present an investigation on the notion of variability developed within the framework of the socioepistemology. Historically and socially, the notion arises in systems of tie practices with engineering activities that, as well, are associated with incorporated models of approach in the dominion of the analytical functions. The results show the notion like a characterization of the function concept that was used for the design of a learning situation. The writing is divided by different stages from work that, generally, brief: 1. The search of the sociocultural atmosphere variability, nonstudents, 2. The modifications undergone by the notion for its diffusion to the Mexican scholastic atmosphere of the last third of century XIX, 3. The characterizations of the knowledge that were taken from the investigation for the design of a learning situation of the function concept and 4. The design of the situation.
