This work is part of a larger project financed by the Department of Education of the Castilla-León Autonomous Regional Government presently being carried out in the Department of Mathematical Education of the University of Valladolid. In this part of the study we worked with a group of primary and secondary school teachers, who first reviewed the materials and methodology to be used in the teaching and learning of mental calculus and later experimented with these materials in the classroom. Their findings were used to make a quantitative evaluation of the relationship between the materials used and the learning results. The skills in mental calculus of one of the groups taking part in the this experiment are also compared to those of two groups of the same age from the USA.
